Our Story: From High School Sweethearts to Full-Time Photographers
Hi there—we’re Jes and Chris, the married duo behind Hand and Arrow Photography.
We’ve been together since we were 14, starting as friends with a shared love for photography. We’d go out into the woods with our cameras, taking pictures of nature, each other, and our pets. It was just a hobby back then—something creative and fun that brought us together.
Years later, after college and the usual 9–5 grind a lot of people find themselves in (ourselves included), we found ourselves coming back to photography—not just as a passion, but as a potential business. What started as side gigs turned into something much more, and eventually we built Hand and Arrow from the ground up into the full-time wedding photography brand it is today.
Our photography businesses has supported our lives at different stages and facilitated us living lives we wanted - being able to do things like travel extensively and buy our home, to expanding our family including our (now) 2 year old son Callen and dog Oatly in tow.
But along the way, we discovered something else:
We didn’t just love photography—we loved the business behind it.
We realized how many creatives struggle with the business side of things—branding, websites, marketing, pricing, finances, systems, client experience—and we wanted to help. That’s where our second brand, Shoot and Thrive, was born.
What Is Shoot and Thrive?
Shoot and Thrive is our education brand dedicated entirely to business coaching for photographers.
It’s where we share everything we’ve learned over years of growing a successful photography business—so you don’t have to figure it out the hard way.
What makes this even more special is the people behind it.
Early in our career, we met Marshall, another photographer in our region (he continues to operate Marshall Scott Photography). At the time, we were technically “competition.” But instead of keeping each other at arm’s length, we became collaborators and friends.
We’d meet up to talk business, share ideas, and help each other grow. Eventually, we realized we were on the same mission—to help photographers build better businesses. Along with Marshall’s wife Beth, we partnered up and created something bigger: The Photography Business Academy.
